Do’s and Don’ts of Oral Hygiene

Below we’ve listed a few quick do’s and don’ts for dental hygiene, including little things you can do everyday. As a believer in conservative dentistry, we want to make sure that our patients can hold onto their natural teeth as long as possible. Techniques like the ones listed below can help.

DO

BRUSH YOUR TEETH TWICE A DAY

Don’t neglect those hard-to-reach spots as well. Brushing twice a day ensures that the worst of the bacteria or food particles are washed away.

FLOSS!

When a toothbrush can’t get all the gunk out, floss is the tool to reach for. The worst places for plaque buildup are around the gums, so be sure to floss between your teeth to prevent the worst of it.

MAKE A DENTIST APPOINTMENT EVERY 6 MONTHS

When you attend regular dental appointments, you not only receive an in-depth cleaning, but also get checked for signs of gum disease, tooth decay and any other oral health issues.

PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU EAT

Certain foods are great for your teeth, and others are not so great. Try sticking to dairy, lean meats, nuts, or high-fiber fruits and vegetables.

CONSIDER OTHER ORAL CARE TOOLS

Don’t be afraid to brush your tongue and utilize mouthwash as well. These can prevent other nuisances such as bad breath and bacterial infections.

FORGET TO REPLACE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH EVERY 3 MONTHS

While most patients may wait until their next appointment to swap out their toothbrush, it should actually be changed out sooner than that. After every 3 to 4 months, the bristles can become ineffective and harbor bacteria. It’s also recommended that you change out your toothbrush after getting over a sickness, such as a cold or the flu.

BRUSH RIGHT AFTER EATING

You may think that you should brush your teeth away after a meal, but actually that could do more harm than good in some cases. Instead, swill some water around and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth.

OVER-WHITEN YOUR SMILE

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. While teeth whitening can make your smile appear cleaner and more attractive, beware of doing too much whitening too often. Over-whitening can cause some problems for your teeth, especially when it comes to sensitivity.

EAT A LOT OF SUGARY FOOD AND DRINK

Sodas and citrus juices are highly acidic and should be consumed only in moderation. Sugary treats, however, can be consumed moderately as well, so long as you maintain a good oral cleaning regimen. Slacking in your oral health can lead these sugary treats to become plaque build-up.

IGNORE ACHES AND PAINS
